Volunteer Trustee Opportunities

As a trustee for Healing Herd, a small Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) specialising in equine assisted therapy and education, you will play a vital role in guiding and governing the organisation to fulfil its mission of providing therapeutic support to people struggling with mental and behavioural difficulties through interaction with horses. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of a pioneering organisation dedicated to promoting well-being and healing through innovative therapeutic interventions.

Responsibilities:

Trustees ensure their charity has a clear strategy, and that its work and goals are in line with its vision. A trustee's role in a charity is to be the ‘guardians of purpose’, making sure that all decisions put the needs of the beneficiaries first.

They safeguard the charity’s assets – both physical assets, including property, and intangible ones, such as its reputation. They make sure these are used well and that the charity is run sustainably.

As a trustee you wouldn’t be expected to take part in the day-to-day running of the charity, this is delegated to the staff, led by the Chief Executive. Instead, you play the role of a ‘critical friend’ to the Chief Executive by giving support and by challenging – in a supportive way – to help them manage effectively. Our trustee boards meet four times a year.

We’re looking for someone with one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Is dedicated to the mission and values of Healing Herd, passionate about promoting equine-assisted therapy and education, and its role in supporting people struggling with their mental health and behaviour.
  • Has knowledge of UK charity law, governance principles, and best practices for charitable organisations.
  • Brings experience in governance, leadership, or senior management roles within the charitable sector, especially in mental health or therapy services.
  • Understands financial management principles and practices, and can interpret financial reports and budgets.
  • Possesses excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Thinks strategically, analyses situations thoughtfully, and makes informed decisions on complex issues.
  • Demonstrates integrity, reliability, and a commitment to ethical conduct, always acting in the best interests of Healing Herd and its beneficiaries.
  • Has professional or lived experience working with young people or adults facing mental health difficulties or special educational needs.

Additional Information:

  • This is a voluntary position, and trustees are expected to serve in a non-executive capacity
  • The time commitment for this role may vary but typically involves attending regular board meetings (up to 4 per year) and other relevant events.
  • Training and support may be provided to help trustees fulfil their responsibilities effectively and develop their skills and knowledge, including opportunities for trustee training and networking within the UK charitable sector.
